You already know that life is full of compromises–like the way you have to eat your broccoli before you get desert, or promise to walk the dog in order to get your spouse to agree to let you, you know, get a dog. So too with photography: A “good exposure” sometimes means that while most of the photo looks fine, there are some deep shadows lacking in detail, like in my photo of a Coast Guard sailor protecting the Staten Island Ferry enroute to Manhattan. Last week I talked about a few techniques for brightening shadows to reveal hidden details This week, let’s wrap it up with a couple more ways to selectively improve the quality of your photographs.

Hospitality continues to be a hallmark of our St. Joseph Family. At 5:30 this morning we bid farewell to a group of 12 missionaries from Lincoln, Nebraska. During their six days in Haiti they made a point of visiting all three of our homes. This was a group that had several optometrists and dentists with them so their main focus was setting up one day eye clinics and dental clinics for the poorest people of Jacmel. The group also examined the children at Wings of Hope and treated the children to a pizza party. Steve is a resident of Wings of Hope that one of the group described as, “Jesus on crack” —because of his exuberant joy. When Steve saw the pizzas’s arrive he jumped up and down, danced and shouted, ” Hallelujah pizzas!!!” The group said the gratitude and “light up the room happiness” of Steve was contagious. In a matter of seconds Steve had everyone enveloped in a spirit of celebration. That is the power of gratitude and being positive. It lifts others up and frees them to spontaneously participate in the dance of life.

As often happens with visiting groups, I was asked to share the history of our St. Joseph Family. In the recounting of our family story I was once again reminded of how often God comes to us through the palpable love of guests who choose to be with us as family rather than stay in a hotel. The guests don’t always bring us pizzas but they do always bring us into Christ consciousness. They make us more aware of God’s redeeming presence in our lives. We always welcome guests to our homes as if we were welcoming Jesus. The first outward expression of our recognizing Christ in our guests is our family tradition of giving each person that comes to our home a refreshing glass of ice cold water. When we offer the glass of water our actions are saying, ” We see you Jesus. Welcome!” We remember Jesus telling us that if we do something as simple as giving someone a glass of water, and we do that with love, then in actuality we are giving that water to Jesus, who from the cross said, ” I am thirsty.” (Jn. 19:28). Jesus thirsts to be in relationship with us. He wants us stop being negative and begin being positive. Jesus wants us to be like Hallelujah Steve and express our gratitude for the little things with enormous, exuberant joy. It is in our focusing on the positives that our difficulties are transformed into blessings. At the wedding feast in Cana the host runs out of wine. Mary, the mother of Jesus, went to Jesus and said, ” They have no more wine.” — To which Jesus replied, “Woman, why do you involve me in this? My time has not yet come.” Is Jesus expressing some negativity here? He is certainly irritated at the request and the timing of the request. Soon Jesus begins to take on a more positive outlook. When Jesus becomes positive the results are also positive. Water is transformed into wine. The celebration of life can continue. As Steve would say, “Hallelujah wine!”

Thank you for being a positive presence in our lives. Thank you for helping turn the ordinary water routines of our days into extraordinary joy. Thank you for enabling us to not just have “wine” but to have the best wine.

This is a new month. This email comes to inform you, ” The SJ STORIES page for October is empty. There are no more stories.” Hopefully you will move beyond being irritated by me reaching out to you and you will take the time to send a positive reflection about your relationship with our St. Joseph Family. In doing so you will energize us with Hallelujah joy. The SJ STORIES web site is: www.sjfamilyhaiti.org To send a positive reflection just email it to stories@sjfamilyhaiti.org

Peace and continued good —-Michael G. and the St. Joseph Family

Wings of Hope was a bit less bright when I returned to Haiti on Saturday. That is because two days before, on Thursday, September 15, 2011, we lost Belinda. Her pure joy and larger-than-life smile will no longer grace our daily lives; but we take comfort in the knowledge that she is now smiling down on us from heaven, free from the pain and disabilities that she had here on earth and that she is rejoicing in the loving embrace of God.

Our St. Joseph Family is built upon a rock solid foundation of prayer. The inspiration to begin the St. Joseph Family came in times of prayer. The grace and increased faith to move forward with the original inspiration required more prayer. On Jan. 31st, 1985, as the founding members of the St. Joseph Family gathered to celebrate that the seed of inspiration was now beginning to germinate, our family roots were deeply embedded into the fertile ground of prayer. From our very first time of gathering to pray as a family we have always closed our prayers with, “St. Joseph pray for us. St. Michael protect us”. Today is the feast of St. Michael the Archangel. As we gathered for our family time of prayer this morning we gave special thanks to God for daily providing us with the protective presence of St. Michael. The powerful presence of St. Michael was felt by all of us on the day Haiti and our three homes were violently shaken by an earthquake. With death and destruction all around us we emerged from the earthquake rubble without losing any of our children. Bill, who had been on the 7th floor of St. Joseph’s praying, was thrown 80 feet, crashing onto a cement courtyard. When Bill looked up he saw the concrete rubble from St. Joseph’s top floors hurtling his way. Bill expected to be crushed to death by those huge menacing masses of concrete and metal. Miraculously the rubble remained in place.

If you’re sick of sloppily made panoramic images, you might want to look at this cool new attachment for your iPhone 4. The GoPano micro, made by EyeSee360, attaches straight to your iPhone 4 over the existing lens; all you have to do is hit the record button in the app.

Utilizing a specially curved mirror, the 360-degree lens collects light from all directions and sends it into your iPhone 4′s lens. From there you can preview the 360-degree video as it records. You can then return to the video and view it from any perspective and at any angle and at any time.

The GoPano micro is a modified version of the GoPano Plus, which you can attach to a multitude of different cameras for both pictures and videos. With the GoPano Plus. you had to take your videos and photos off the camera and then edit them on the computer, but on the iPhone 4 the GoPano app does everything for you.

The GoPan micro also started on Kickstarter and has raised $169,209–substantially more than the initial $20,000 fundraising goal. It’s not available yet, but the creators hope to make it available to you soon. Make sure to check out the full specs at the GoPano store and to join the email list to get notified when it becomes available!

The pan-motion technique adds drama and movement to photos and is commonly used in sports and even news photography. The idea is that if you slow down your shutter speed and follow your subject with the lens as you are taking the photo, the subject will be clear and the background will be a spectacular blur. To take pan-motion photos, you need a camera with manual controls, a moving subject and a lot of patience and luck.

Pan-photography is a quick, frantic technique so it is best to rid yourself of the variables. If you can, switch to manual focus so your lens doesn’t try to auto focus on the background instead of the subject. In high-traffic areas, your plane of focus can be easily predictable. A bike lane, for example, is an easy spot to focus on in order to keep your attention to the subject’s speed.

When shooting pan photography, your camera should be in continuous shooting, burst, or bracket mode, so that it takes multiple photos as the subject moves in front of you. Because the camera is moving with your subject, the subject appears still and the background will blur. Out of the dozens of photos that you take, maybe one or two will turn out and the rest will be a blur.

Follow your subject as they move across the scene. If you are lucky, one pan-motion photo will turn out.

Set your Shutter

All DSLRs have a manual option, and many advanced point-and-shoots have them as well. (Check out a list of some of the top point-and-shoot cameras with manual controls.) If your camera has manual settings, a good place to start is shutter-priority mode (usually indicated by S or Tv on the camera dial). Review your instruction manual for how to adjust your ISO and shutter speed in shutter-priority so that your camera will automatically adjust the aperture for you based on how much light is available. If you are using a manual setting, remember that the slower your shutter speed is, the higher your aperture number (or f-stop) must be in order to keep your subject in focus. Otherwise, you will end up with a blown-out, blurry mess.

Depending on how fast your subject is moving and how far away it is, you could pan with a shutter speed as fast as 1/100 or as slow as 1/4. I usually like to start at 1/60 and work from there. Be careful about going too slow with the shutter speed. Depending on your lens length, you could start to get camera shake blur on top of your pan motion blur below about 1/30. A clear subject is the result of a steady hand or a tripod with a pan-tilt head. These tripods come with either a two-way or three-way tilting head and allow for the user to control one axis without affecting the others. In this case, you would want to lock all axes except the panoramic rotating one that gives you a smooth, steady view.

I kept my shutter speed quick so the bridge would be visible in the background.Choose a Background

Good pan photography also depends on the quality of the background. The best backgrounds for pan photography have nice colors, a lot of details to blur, and allow the focus to stay on your subject. You can adjust your shutter speed to include more or less background detail-the faster the speed, the more detail your background will have.

Make sure to balance the light in the composition. Generally, the light that your subject is in should be the same as the background, but mixing the light in your frame can make some excellent compositions if you know what to look for. For example, you can place your subject in full-sun while the background is in dark shadow-creating even more of a focus on your subject.

The ideal time of day to shoot pan photos is during the magic hour-that’s the time just before sunset or after sunrise. During this time, the light will be diffused and warm-great for slower shutter speeds. If you are shooting in mid-day sun, you may be limited by how small you can set your aperture. The Sony Cybershot, for example, can only go to f14 in full-zoom. Stick to the shade or wait for low light if you are limited to a fast shutter speed.

Be patient and good luck!

Pan photography is just as much luck as it is skill. Be patient. Once you get the right settings and background, wait for an interesting subject to come along and snap away. Link to your pan-motion photos in the comments!

In doing a story for our sister company, Tech Authority, I stumbled across this site. It has wallpaper clocks and the wallpaper is absolutely beautiful. To use the wallpaper as a clock you will need to download and install the following free software; dexpot using this link. http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,70871/description.html . It is a virtual desktop software that creates multiple desktops for use. As an engineer and photographer, I have used multi desktops for years in Linux as it enables me to have multiple apps open without running out of desktop space. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

NOTE: The dexpot software is free, but during the install it will ask you to install a third party application, this is why it is free. You can decline to install the third party software and just install the dexpot software.

Make a Better Black-and-White Photo

There are a lot of things you can do to your photos with a single click in your photo editing program. Last week, for example, I showed you how you can use the Color Replacement tool in Adobe Photoshop Elements to change specific colors in an image. And in the past, I’ve explained how easy it is to convert any photo to a stylish black-and-white composition by setting the saturation to zero in any image editor.

In Adobe Photoshop Elements, you can use the Remove Color command (found in the Enhance, Adjust Color, Remove Color menu) to convert a photo to black-and-white in one step. This week, let’s combine that with a little Layers action to give you more control over what your black-and-white photo looks like.

Start With Duplication

As usual, I’ll show you how to do this in Photoshop Elements–though the steps are basically the same in any photo editor that supports layers.

Get started by opening a photo that you would like to turn into a black and white. But don’t go straight to the Remove Color command. Instead, duplicate the photo in a new layer first. To do that, choose Layer, Duplicate Layer from the menu, and then click OK. You should see two copies of the photo in the Layers Palette on the right side of the screen.

Turn It Into a Black and White

Now we’re ready for the black-and-white-ification of the photo. Make sure that the top layer is selected in the Layer Palette, then choose Enhance, Adjust Color, Remove Color. The photo should turn black and white–but if you glance over at the Layer Palette, you will notice that the bottom layer is still in color.

Tweaking the Black-and-White Photo

Here’s where we get tricky. We’re going to fine-tune the black-and-white version of the photo by editing the underlying color layer. Go back to the Layer Palette and change the blend mode from Normal to Hue. This will let you edit the black-and-white top layer by fiddling with aspects of the underlying color photo, such as the Hue and Saturation. The hue of the color layer will directly inform the final tone of the black-and-white photo.

To try this out, click on the bottom layer–the one that is still in color–and choose Enhance, Adjust Color, Adjust Hue/Saturation. Now you can change the hue and saturation of your bottom layer, and watch the effect on the black-and-white layer. That’s not all. With the bottom layer still selected, choose Enhance, Adjust Lighting, Brightness/Contrast. Notice that as you move the brightness and contrast sliders, you can see the effect on the final black-and-white image in real time.

When you are satisfied with your photo, you can combine the layers (right-click on a layer in the Layer Palette and choose Flatten Layers) and save the image as a JPEG. Here you can see how this photo evolved from color to black-and-white to an enhanced black-and-white using layer adjustments.

Original color photo.

Simple black-and-white image.

Black-and-white image enhanced with layers.
