MacKendy is from the Jackèt area of Port-au-Prince. His parents are unemployed and very poor. They have five children together, MacKendy is the middle child, and his father has more children with other women. When MacKendy was 10-years-old he went to live on the streets because his parents couldn’t afford to take care of him. He survived on the streets by begging and washing cars. He felt worthless because of the way people treated him. He often wanted to return home, but he knew his parents couldn’t take care of him. In his dreams, MacKendy hoped for a place to live where he could go to school and be safe.
In 2003 MacKendy met a visitor to Haiti who wanted to help him. MacKendy told him about his desire to find a home to live in and to go to school. The man agreed to help MacKendy and took him to live with a friend of his in Jacmel. However, the woman did not treat MacKendy well. When MacKendy’s friend heard about this, he started working to get MacKendy out of that house and into Trinity House.
MacKendy is very happy to be at Trinity House because he is treated with value, respect and love. “Now I am in school. I have everything I want.” MacKendy’s dream is to finish school and become a famous artist so he can help other children who are living on the street.
