Gayly is from Cite Soley, the slum area of Port-au-Prince. His parents had jobs, but they did not make enough money to support Gayly and his brothers and sisters. Sometimes they did not have money to buy food to eat. However, Gayly’s parents wanted a better life for their children and always made sure they sent Gayly to school. As Gayly grew, his parents were scared about what would become of him. Because he was a boy living in Cite Soley, where gang activity is rampant, he could easily be persuaded to get involved in that lifestyle. Gayly’s mother when to her friend who is a pastor and knows the St. Joseph Family and asked him to help. Pastor Leon brought Gayly to the St. Joseph Family. Gayly went to live at Trinity House in Jacmel to get him far away from the negative influences in Cite Soley.
Gayly has thrived at Trinity House. As he says, “Now I feel safe and valued because I have a home to live in, food to eat and a chance to continue with my school.” His dream is to be able to finish school and get a good job so he can support his family and help his parents.
