Emilson is from a small village near Jacmel. His family is very poor and his parents have many children. Because his parents had a hard time supporting their family, from a very young age Emilson looked for ways to earn money or get food to eat. He worked for a farmer, danced with a rara band and gathered sand for a builder. But, in all these situations he was exploited and was rarely paid, despite his long hours of hard work. One day the rara band he danced for performed at Trinity House and one of the graduates of the St. Joseph Family was present and saw how Emilson was being treated. He asked Emilson if he wanted help and went to Emilson’s family and told them about the St. Joseph Family and they asked if Emilson could live at one of our homes.
Emilson has lived at both St. Joseph’s Home for Boys and Trinity House in the past. Because of behavior problems, for a time Emilson had to return to live with his biological family in Jacmel, but he still participated in the programs at Trinity House during that time. With Emilson’s new level of maturity he was allowed to return to live at St. Joseph’s Home for Boys. He is excited about this and being able to participate in the art and dance programs at St. Joseph’s.
