Help, Inc was originally started in 1971 as a crisis and suicide telephone intervention service sponsored by the Reidsville Cooperative Christian Ministry. From 1976 until June 30, 1998, Help, Inc. provided information and referral to Rockingham County residents.

In 1982, Help Inc. received additional grant funds and implemented a domestic violence program. In 1994, Help, Inc with the assistance of grant monies, community fund-raising, and individual contributions, opened "Freedom House," Rockingham County's only shelter for battered women and children. The agency officially became Help, Incorporated: Center Against Violence July 1, 1998, the first Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault agency in Rockingham County.
